How can ThreeSpires Physiotherapy help me with my neurological condition?
One of our mobile physiotherapists will come to your home at a time and day of your choosing – avoiding the need to leave the house and go to a clinic which can be extremely difficult and tiring for many people with neurological conditions. Our neurological physiotherapy service is based in Lichfield and serves anywhere within a 20 minute drive including Sutton Coldfield, Rugeley, Walsall, Tamworth, Cannock and Burton Upon Trent.
Due to the complex nature of neurological conditions, the lengthy assessment process and the need for ongoing re-assessment as patients improve each treatment session is 1 hour. It is our experience that this extended period of time allows for a much greater benefit and response to neurological physiotherapy and is especially beneficial for older patients who may fatigue quickly and may need longer rest periods in sessions.
A full subjective assessment (discussion with your physio) will be conducted of your condition, your current and previous mobility and fitness levels and your goals for the future. Your physio will also look at your lifestyle, past medical history, symptoms, aggravating factors, nature of the condition and any risk factors in order to gain a full picture and how best to proceed
A comprehensive physical examination of your posture, strength, range of movement, gait and bio-mechanics will then take place. This will enable us to identify the best rehabilitation strategies and develop an effective treatment plan to alleviate any pain, improve mobility and assist you in returning to full fitness.
Treatment options during the session may include, balance work, strengthening exercises, falls prevention, mobilising practice, joint mobilisation, gait re-education, deep tissue massage and stretching. The appropriate combination of treatment options will be chosen by your physiotherapist and tailored to provide maximum improvement in terms of strength, range of motion, mobility, fitness and reduction in any pain.
Self management is a key part of recovering from or living with neurological conditions and your physio will provide you with an individualised rehabilitation program that is tailored to meet your requirements and goals whatever they may be. Elements included in this program will be: a graded strengthening and exercise program, stretching techniques, balance exercises, postural advice, core strengthening exercises and strategies to re-adapt to normal daily life.

Why Have Neurological Physiotherapy At Home?
A common question from many of our prospective patients as physiotherapists is: "why have physio at home?". This is a good question and one to which we as physios would say there are a huge range of benefits of having neurological physiotherapy at home rather than visiting a physiotherapy clinic. I have tried to list below the main benefits and reasons for having neurological physiotherapy at home:
1. It's hard to leave the home: for many of our patients with neurological conditions, leaving the home is very fatiguing and at times can be impossible and even if they do manage to get to a physiotherapy clinic they are exhausted and in pain by the time the see the physio. Having one of our mobile neurological physiotherapists visit them at home takes away this difficulty and means that they can concentrate solely on their exercises and recovery. For some neurological conditions such as a stroke the early days of recovery are especially difficult and in this period having one of our physios visit at home is hugely helpful in terms of accessing neurological physiotherapy at this key time in their recovery.
2. Fatigue: a common side effect of neurolgical conditions such as a stroke, MS or Parkinson's is fatigue and often as physios we see patients at home that find that fatigue is almost the worst side effect of their neurological condition. For these patients visiting a physiotherapy clinic is exhausting and by the time they get home after seeing the physio at the clinic they feel that in fact they are worse because of the fatigue. For these patients having one of our neurological physiotherapists visit them at home is of enormous benefit and reduces the problem of fatigue.
3. Physiotherapy assessment at home: this benefit sounds like common sense but there is actually a very significant benefit in physiotherapy terms to having your neuro physio visit you at home. When assessing a patient in a clinc with a neurological condition you rely upon them telling you how things are at home and what exercises that they will be able to do, sometimes patients are very good at explaining these things to their physio but commonly they struggle to relate all the important factors. As a physio being able to visit my neurological patients at home is enormously helpful as it allows me to see the environment they live in, the challenges they face and the support they have at home and enables me as a physiotherapist to develop a much better plan.
