Why Have Physiotherapy At Home After Surgery?
Many of our physiotherapy patients who are recovering from an operation initially think that they will need to visit a physiotherapy clinic after their surgery because they need access to specialised equipment or they are not aware that a home visit physiotherapy service exists. In almost all cases, they would be better staying at home and concentrating on rehab at home with a physio visiting them. We have a whole article here on the benefits of physiotherapy at home: Mobile Physiotherapy Service At Your Home . Below are some of the key benefits/reasons for having one of our mobile physiotherapists visit you at home after your surgery:
- It may be difficult to leave your house: After having surgery and being sent home many people will find it very hard to get out of the house and get to a physiotherapy clinic either due to pain or fatigue or a combination of both. For many of the patients that our physios see at home, getting out of the house can be enormously fatiguing and painful (especially in the early days) and by the time they have struggled to a physiotherapy clinic they are too exhausted to work with the physio. In this case our mobile post surgical physiotherapy service is great for enabling access to physiotherapy after surgery. Having one of our physios come out to you after your sugery during this period means that you are still able to access essential physiotherapy.
- Pain: after surgery, pain levels are often very high and many of our patients find that they are in too much pain to go and visit a physiotherapy clinic and as such prefer to have one of our mobile physios visit them at home. Having one of our physiotherapists visit them at home after surgery enables these patients to still have access to physiotherapy despite being unable to get out of the home.
- Fatigue: another complication after surgery is fatigue. Commonly if you have had a large operation such as a hip replacement you may feel very fatigued at the start and find yourself unable to go and visit a physiotherapy clinic. This is where our home visit physiotherapy service comes into its own and still enables you to access high quality physiotherapy at home.
- Assessment at home: as physiotherapists visiting our patients at home, experience has shown that there are significant benefits to having physiotherapy at home even for those patients who are able to get to a physiotheraoy clinic. Having the opportunity to see a patient in thier home environment and understand their lifestyle and limitations upon rehab after surgery makes a huge difference to how we as physios plan for rehab exercises. A physiotherapy assessment at home allows your physiotherapist the opportunity to tailor your management plan to your lifestyle and home environment in a way that it is simply not possible to do when assessing a patient after surgery in a physiotherapy clinic.
- Time saving: having one of our mobile physiotherapists visit you, clearly saves you a lot of time. You do not have to take time out of your schedule to drive to and from a physiotherapy clinic.
How can ThreeSpires Physiotherapy help me with my recovery from surgery?
After booking an initial physiotherapy assessment which can be done easily either online or by phone one of our mobile physiotherapists will come to your home at a time and day of your choosing – avoiding the need to take time off work, attempt to finish early or struggle out of the house if your pain is extremely severe. Each initial physiotherapy assessment varies according to the needs of the patient but below is a description of the general process involved:
A full subjective assessment (discussion with your physio) is the first part of the physiotherapy assessment process and covers your surgery, any restrictions in place, protocols from the surgeon and your goals for rehabilitation. As physiotherapists it is our experience that this is a vital part of any initial physiotherapy assessment as it gives you the chance to discuss what is important to you and enables your physiotherapist to understand in detail how best to help you.
Physical examination of your posture, strength, range of movement, gait and bio-mechanics will then take place. This gives your physio information about your strength, range of motion and what needs working on and lets them identify the best rehabilitation strategies and develop an effective treatment plan to alleviate any pain, improve mobility and assist you in returning to full fitness.
Treatment options from your physiotherapist will largely depend upon the nature of your problem but may include, joint mobilisation, gait re-education, mobility and balance work, deep tissue massage, stretching and strengthening exercises. The appropriate combination of treatment options will be chosen by your physiotherapist and tailored to provide maximum improvement in terms of strength, range of motion, mobility, fitness and reduction in any pain.
Self management is a key part of recovering from surgery and your physio will provide you with an individualised rehabilitation program that is tailored to meet your requirements and goals whatever they may be. Elements included in this program will be: a graded strengthening and exercise program, stretching techniques, balance exercises, postural advice, core strengthening exercises and strategies to re-adapt to normal daily life.
