Brain Injuries

A brain inury occurs whenever the brain is damaged and is unable to recover fully and function is affected. There are 2 types of brain injuries: traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and acquired brain injuries (ABI) and physiotherapy will provide an important part of recovery for both.

Traumatic Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury occurs as the result of trauma to the brain, at ThreeSpires Physiotherapy we understand the enormous impact that this can cause to a person's life and also the huge difference that physiotherapy can make in recovering from a brain injury. Traumatic Brain injuries are caused by a direct impact causing the brain to hit against the skull and cause bleeding and bruising of the brain tissues.

Acquired Brain Injuries

With an acquired brain injury there is no trauma or impact and instead the damage to the brain is caused by internal factors such as a stroke, a loss of oxygen or an infection.

Depending on the severity of the damage a brain injury may be permanent or temporary but commonly physiotherapy will play a key part in recovery. All of our physiotherapists have significant experience of working with patients with brain injuries and will be able to visit you at home to help you with your recovery.

What Are The Symptoms of A Brain Injury?

The effects of a brain injury are very variable and depend upon the severity of the trauma, the person, the area involved and the amount of brain tissue damaged. Some common symptoms include: dizziness, fatigue, pain, loss of balance, altered sensation, reduced mobility and muscle strength.

Physiotherapy is incredibly important for recovery after a brain injury and once discharged from hospital it is essential that you have access to regular physiotherapy to allow you to achieve your full potential. At ThreeSpires Physiotherapy our physiotherapists will be able to visit you at home in Lichfield, Sutton Coldfield, Walsall, Tamworth, Cannock, Rugeley and Burton and assist you in making the best possible recovery. Physiotherapy treatment after a brain injury obviously depends upon the symptoms that you are experiencing but will usually involve:

  • a detailed assessment of how your brain injury has affected you.
  • work on improving balance.
  • working on coordination.
  • trying to improve movement and muscle strength.
  • improving sitting and standing posture

Many things that used to be easy and part of your normal life may become very challenging after a brain injury and our physiotherapists will be able to help you to maximise your functional independence. We can also offer advice on specialised equipment such as splints and walking aids that will make your life easier and help to maintain your independence.

What To Expect With Physiotherapy  At Home In Sutton Coldfield After A Brain Injury

After making an appointment one of our mobile physios will visit you at home in Sutton Coldfield for an initial assessment to see how physiotherapy may be able to help after your brain injury. Bookings can be made easily by phone, email or our contact form on our website and generally we can get one of our physios out to you in Sutton Coldfield within a week. If you are sending us an email to book an assessment, it is helpful to have some details about your brain injury. Key information for us as physios would be: the date of the injury, what happened, which hospital you went to and how long you spent in hospital after your brain injury. We would also like to know about when you got home, your postcode (this lets us work out driving time for Sutton Coldfield), your goals and how you are physically doing at the moment. Giving us this level of detail about what has happened to you and how your brain injury has affected you, allows our physio to be much more prepared when they visit you at home in Sutton Coldfield.

Our mobile physio will now attend your home in Sutton Coldfield. As a community physiotherapy service, we really pride ourselves on trying to be on time but sometimes there may be traffic holdups, so if your physio is 5 minutes late please don’t worry, they will be there. At the start of the session your physio will discuss your brain injury with you, go over the background, what your problems are and your goals for your recovery. This part of the assessment is in our opinion as physios, the most important part as it gives your physio a good overview of you and what you would like to work on.

Next, there is a physical assessment which looks at how your brain injury has affected you, how you are walking (with any aids) and your strength. This physical part tries to decide what is weak and what needs working on to make the best recovery after your brain injury. Our physio will then discuss their findings and create a personalised exercise program to help you with your recovery after your brain injury that you can do at home in Sutton Coldfield. Finally, they will go through a management plan and book any follow up physiotherapy sessions that are needed.
