Why home visit physiotherapy?
When physiotherapy is able to be provided at home, patients receive many benefits that the old physiotherapy model based in a clinic is unable to offer. Home based physiotherapy is coming to be seen as the optimal mode of delivery for physiotherapy due to the many advantages it offers for patients. Physiotherapy patients with our service have no need to find extra time in their schedules to travel to a clinic - rather our physiotherapists are able to visit them at home! For some of our patients who have long working days, lengthy commutes and busy lives, this can be a great advantage.
Home visit physiotherapy is obviously able to offer more advantages than just saving time alone; being assessed in the home environment facilitates a thorough examination of how your home and any lifestyle factors may be affecting you and your condition. This allows our physiotherapists to more easily determine the best treatment modalities and rehab methods that are likely to work best. For some of our patients who have a neurological condition (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) this is a great advantage and is also ideal for those patients who have had a stroke and are trying to re-establish normal movement patterns. We see many patients who have been ill and recently come out of hospital and these patients find our home visit physiotherapy service to be an ideal solution as it makes recovery and strengthening that much easier and quicker.
Mobilising and walking can be difficult if not impossible for some of our patients and the time needed to get to a clinic makes rehab extremely difficult. Physiotherapy at home offers these patients a way of accessing rehab as it removes the problem of travelling to a clinic. Walking or mobilising can be difficult for a number of reasons: some patients may have undergone surgery (possibly a hip replacement) or they may just have come out of hospital following an illness and become de-conditioned. Our service provides a way to recuperate and improve strength as it allows rehabilitation to occur earlier and also in the comfort of the home.
What will it involve?
Having arranged an appointment, one of our physiotherapists will visit you at home. Each physiotherapist carries a plinth (massage/assessment table) and a bag with equipment they may need.
The first session generally starts with a talk between you and the physiotherapist to find out what has been going on. This allows the physio to ascertain what your main problem might be, have a good awareness of your goals and also to go over any past medical history. A large amount of experience has shown us that this is an essential part of any session as it gives you the opportunity to explain what you are hoping for and also enables the physiotherapist to review how they may be able to assist.
A physical assessment and examination is the next stage and this covers a range of factors including (but by no means limited to) - strength, range of movement, balance, alignment and gait. Here the physiotherapist will be attempting to identify any physical dysfunctions and analyse what may be their underlying cause. Once combined with the information from the discussion in the first part of the session a diagnosis and treatment plan is formed by your physiotherapist.
The diagnosis and treatment plan will be explained clearly and we will always go through the reasons that have led to that diagnosis. Our experience has demonstrated that the best results come when patients have a good knowledge of the causes of their problem and how they may be able to help themselves.
Treatment then commences: - we have many treatment options including deep tissue massage, acupuncture, spinal manipulation and sports massage. Once the session has finished any exercises that you need to complete are detailed and any follow up sessions booked
