Why home visit physiotherapy?
Having physiotherapy at home offers many advantages that the traditional physiotherapy method of delivery at a physical clinic just can not offer and is now becoming viewed as the best way of providing physiotherapy to patients. The patients of our home visit physiotherapy service don't need to find extra time in their week to visit a clinic - instead a physiotherapist visits them at home saving a large amount of time for them! For some who have long hours of work and tiring commutes this time saving alone can be of great benefit.
Our home visit physiotherapy service offers more advantages to our patients than time saving; physiotherapy at home allows for comprehensive analysis of the multiple ways in which your home and lifestyle might affect you and your rehabilitation. Furthermore it lets us assess more thoroughly the treatments and rehabilitation methods that will work best for you. Patients of our service who have a neurological condition (e.g. Multiple Sclerosis) have found this to be of great benefit. It also assists patients who are recovering from a stroke and those who have recently been to hospital after a period of illness and are now slowly recovering.
Some of our patients are currently experiencing difficulty with movement and walking and find that the time and difficulty of visiting a clinic makes rehab and strengthening almost impossible. In these cases home visit physiotherapy offers a perfect solution by eliminating the problems associated with visiting a physiotherapy clinic. Our patients are very varied and there are often many causes for the difficulties that they are experiencing: they may have had a surgical procedure (potentially a knee replacement) or they may have been taken to hospital after illness and become de-conditioned and lost confidence in their ability to walk. Physiotherapy in the home environment offers these patients the chance to access rehabilitation much earlier and improves greatly the possibility of making a full recovery.
What will it involve?
A chartered physiotherapist will come out and see you at home after you arrange an initial appointment. Each of our physiotherapists has a plinth (massage/assessment table) and a bag with equipment they may need.
The first section of the session will start with a discussion which will cover what your main problem is, your goals and any past medical history. Experience has demonstrated clearly to us that this is an essential component of the overall assessment as it allows the patient an opportunity to discuss what they are looking for and also enables a clear plan to be formulated by the physiotherapist of how they may be able to help.
Next is a comprehensive physical assessment which analyses a series of factors including - gait, muscular strength, balance, alignment and posture. This allows any physical dysfunctions to be highlighted and also facilitates an analysis of the underlying cause of these problems. Along with the information gathered earlier this can then be used by the physiotherapist to prepare a diagnosis and treatment plan.
Any provisional diagnosis made at tis stage will then be explained clearly and your physiotherapist will lead you through the reasoning process that has led to that diagnosis. Experience shows us that in order to achieve the best outcomes with patients it is vital that you have a clear understanding of your problem and our physios will always try to explain things clearly.
The treatment component of the session will then take place - there are many options including spinal manipulation, soft tissue massage, acupuncture and sports massage. Once the session has finished any exercises that you need to complete are detailed and any follow up sessions booked
