The Benefits of Physiotherapy At Home
Hello and welcome back again to the ThreeSpires Physiotherapy blog where we take a look at all things physiotherapy related. Over our many blog posts over the years we have looked at lots of topics and the benefits that physiotherapy can bring in a variety of ways and for a range of conditions but in this post I thought we would look at the benefits of our having physiotherapy at home instead of in a traditional clinic.
As a home visit physiotherapy service based in Lichfield (Staffordshire) and serving the surrounding areas such as Sutton Coldfield, Aldridge, Walsall, Tamworth, Burton and Rugeley I thought it could be helpful, for anyone reading this blog and trying to decide whether or not a home visit physiotherapy service is for them, to go over the benefits of a home visit service.
1. Time Saving!
So, this may seem like quite a minor and obvious benefit to having physiotherapy at home and having a physio come out you but it is actually a very important and key benefit for our patients. Driving to and from a physiotherapy clinic often takes longer than the actual treatment session and if you have gone to the physio for some deep tissue work and spinal manipulation on your back then a further hour's drive home is not going to help you sort that bad back! Having a home visit service takes away that time difficulty especially for those with busy lives who really struggle to find that extra time in the week to see a physiotherapist.
2. Saves the Difficulty of Leaving the House
Many of our patients have significant difficulties with mobility and in fact this is often the primary reason that they are seeing a mobile, home visit physiotherapist. There are many reasons that they may have lost mobility or find it difficult to get out of the house: they may have recently had an operation such as a hip replacement, they may have had a stroke or have another neurological condition such as Parkinson's Disease or they may be very elderly and infirm. In these cases our home visit physiotherapy service is ideal as it eliminates these difficulties and brings high quality physiotherapy to them.
3. They Live in a Care Home
Many of our patients are permanent residents (or on respite) of a care home and as such they are extermely unlikely to be able to visit a traditional bricks and mortar physiotherapy clinic and as such need a physio to visit them at their care home. In this case our mobile, at home physiotherapy service really helps these people access physiotherapy and benefit from seeing a physiotherapist. Without this mobile physio service they would be unable to have any physiotherapy.
4. Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
In the immediate period after an operation such as a knee or hip replacement mobilising to the kitchen is often difficult enough let alone getting to a physiotherapy clinic! In this case having a mobile physiotherapist come out to you at home is essential and will give you access to physiotherapy when you need it most. Often it is essential to access physio during the initial period after a major piece of surgery such as a knee replacment and in this case having a physio come out to you ensures that your recovery can be optimised. Our home visit physiotherapy service is ideal if you have just had an operation and want access to a physiotherapist but find it is too painful to leave the house.
5. Assessment and Rehab at Home
As a physiotherapist seeing people in their homes one of the key benefits of having physiotherapy at home is the ability of your physio to look at your home environment and see how rehab will fit in and if there are any factors at home that are influencing your problems. For someone working at home and doing long hours in a home office it really helps if the physiotherapist can see your working environment and do a DSE assessment of your office. Or if you are elderly and have been having falls it is virtually essential that your physio can see you in your home to identify any trip hazards and reasons why you might be falling. In reality most rehabilitation and doing of physiotherapy exercises takes place at home and therefore it makes sense for your physiotherapist to see you in your home environment and give you exercises and rehab that will fit this environment.
6. Paediatric Physiotherapy
With children physiotherapy is much better done in an environment where they and their parents feel comfortable. Also the physiotherapist will often need to assess how the child is performing in their home environment to see how their difficulties may be affecting them. Having a physiotherapist come to the home also saves having to sort out childcare arrangements if you have more than one child!
